The Magic Sword (Experiment #411)

Starring: Basil Rathbone, Estelle Winwood, and a cast of other embarrased actors.

Plot Summary: Directed by Bert I. (as in "iiiiiieeee...god, not another one") Gordon, "The Magic Sword" tells the tale of the brave Prince George who battles seven curses to rescue a nubile young princess from the clutches of the evil sorcerer Lodac.

Seems the sorcerer, played by a painfully embarrassed Basil Rathbone, is just a little cheesed that his witch sister was burned at the stake and nabs the young princess to feed to his sock-puppet dragon. Armed with a magic sword and shield, bestowed upon him by his adopted sorceress mother, George sets out with his rag-tag crew of knights to recover the princess. Along the perilous journey, the group battles "curses" such as an acid swamp (boiling Kool-Aid), an angry mob of circus folk, and a mess of floating flea-market masks, to name a few.

The climax (?) of the film results in Prince George slaying the fierce sock puppet dragon and ultimately, Basil Rathbone - who by the end of the film is draped in so many scarves, he looks like Cher in the movie "Silkwood."

Notable Notes:

  • Be sure to catch Crow's anthem of devotion to Estelle Winwood, who plays the sorceress Sybil in the film. It's almost as good as the song he sings when he falls head-over-heels for Kim Cattrall.
  • If you're wondering where you've seen Estelle before, she was on Bewitched, as well as having played Aunt Hilda on the old Batman TV show.
  • Joel and the 'Bots do a great commercial spoof for "Doggy Basil Rathbones."
