Lost Continent (Experiment #208)

Starring: Cesar Romero, Hugh Beaumont, and Sid Melton (aka Uncle Charley on the Danny Thomas show)

Plot Summary: After a super-fast experimental rocket goes off course, a group of three scientists and three G.I.'s go after it. While flying over a remote island, all electromagnetic systems go haywire and the plane crashes in a jungle paradise. Our intrepid sextet finds out that the rocket has crashed on top of the "sacred mountain of the gods" - an event which has sent the islanders scurrying for cover. Of course, our heroes start clambering up the mountain in pursuit.

Thus begins the infamous "Rock Climbing" sequence. There are twenty straight minutes of rock climbing action. During this time, only two things happen. Dr. Rostov (a Russian scientist who seems mighty German) sees a big lizard, and Dr. Briggs falls off the mountain in one of the least suspenseful "holding-on-for-dear-life" sequences ever conceived.

Reaching the top, the party finds themselves in a prehistoric jungle. After fighting off a brontosaurus and watching some triceratops fight each other, they find the rocket, and the guy from the Danny Thomas show gets eaten by a dinosaur. At this point, the mountain starts blowing up (I guess it was a volcano), and the remaining foursome scurry down the mountain in the middle of an avalanche, during which a huge foam rock hits Phillips (played by Beaumont) right in the store with seemingly no effect on his groinal region. As they escape in a catamaran, the island is destroyed in a montage of stock footage.

Invention Exchange: Exercise equipment in reverse form (ie, a real flight of stairs as a stair-stepper machine).

Notable Notes:

  • Hugh Beaumont visits Joel and the Bots as a Horseman on the Apocalypse to "Rain unholy death upon them." I don't know why, but this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen MST do.
  • During the rock climbing (there's 25 minutes of it in total) Joel has a rare freakout and actually starts yelling at the movie (there's a clip of it below). It really is quite painful...
